How to Build a Business Out of Your Passion

ประกาศบน - Last Modified on

Passion is “a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something”. (Merriam-Webster)

What are you passionate about? Are you fond of doing graphic illustrations? How about photography? Or do you find joy in calligraphy?

There are many people in the world who are now making a living from their passion. Many startups that made it big were built from the passion of their founders. Do you think you can, too? When you’re good at doing something you are very fond of and you have that entrepreneurial spirit, consider taking it to the next level.

Passion and profit -- can this be a good mix? Yes. That’s if you have a strong determination, a well-structured business plan, and an entrepreneurial know-how.

Let’s take calligraphy as an example. You love doing all those meticulous decorative handwriting. It relaxes your mind and taps the happy hormones in your body. Why not start your own calligraphy business? Extend your calligraphy services to people or sell products where your exquisite letterings are printed.

How will you know if there’s a business opportunity for doing calligraphy? Determine if there’s a market for it and if there’s an existing competition.

Do you plan to launch something big right away or start small for now? If you can’t afford to open a physical store yet, join the online marketplace and start your business there.

Will your calligraphy business be product-oriented or service-oriented?

Product-oriented ideas:
- Sell customized gift items (like greeting cards)
- Sell calligraphy kit (pens, guide books, practice paper pad, inks, markers)

Service-oriented ideas:
- Make video tutorials and upload them to your website or YouTube channel
- Set up calligraphy classes
- Offer packages for handwritten monograms on wedding invitations

Whichever business orientation you choose, back it up with a well-crafted business plan. It will guide your decision-making in every aspect of your venture.

Passion is Not Enough

When you put up your own business, you do it with pride and excitement. Doing what you love and loving what you do are two of the best things about being an entrepreneur. Although running a business makes you feel like you’re on top of the world, there will always be down days.

Passion is not the only thing you need to make your business a huge success. Remind yourself of these things:

1. You need to work hard.
2. Keep track of your finances.
3. Don’t forget your mission and goals.
4. You have to constantly learn how business trends are evolving.
5. Hire people who share the same fervor for what you do.

Driving Force

Although we mentioned above that passion is not enough for a venture to become big, it still is a vital factor. Don’t let the weight of your entrepreneurial tasks crush it.

Keep your passion alive. It will be one good reason for you to get moving until you hit your goals. It’s that driving force inside you that will remind you why you’re doing business in the first place, especially on those challenging days.

Remind yourself of the happiness you get when you were just doing calligraphy, or any activity for that matter, as a hobby. Running a business is a serious responsibility, but don’t lose the fun part.

With that, let’s end this post with a quote from GoPro founder Nicholas Woodman:

“I feel like in a world where we all try to figure out our place and our purpose here, your passions are one of your most obvious guides.”
