I have macro pictures of objects (mostly insects) taken from many points of view, and need a color 3D model (like ply) generated from them.

Note the naming scheme: 40R and 4Z means that there are 40 points of view, and each point of view was taken at 4 different focus heights. There also exist the "raw" images which might be better to work with, which are stitched together into the "stitched" folder for each.

I'd recommend trying "fake firefly wasp", "wasp", "japanese beetle", "Fly with dead eye", and "rainbow swirly". (Please don't do "little green stink bug", since I have a model of it already). Thanks!

Edit: Please note if you're still planning on entering, that I am trying to get models (at least partially) generated directly from the photographs! I am trying to demonstrate scanning, not just reference photo taking. I saw an amazing model from scratch earlier, and I hope nobody else has to waste their time and talent.

You know, from those gifs, or pictures from those gifs, is going to be quite hard, since those are very complex models and photogrammetry will require a triple height set of pics. It would be easier to just model the insects from scratch, but that would be way over 25 bucks...

  What do you mean by an ordered background? A plain background with an image pattern or a set of ordered objects in the background? Actually, both things would help, but again as long as you get three different sets from three different angles. And while you work on a tilt gantry, I'm guessing for the camera, what about a tilting rig for supporting your object? Something that can hold your object as it is right now and then tilt it 45 degrees down and 45 degrees up for two more sets of pics. Wouldn't be ideal and would kill the references around the object, but would be easier to do, as an improvised solution to tilting the camera, that might still work better than just having only one set of pics all at the same camera angle.

  These are good ideas. I was thinking of a checkered background, or one with loose objects. The first successful 3d reconstruction I did was with a stink bug before I started adding a plain background. There were wires and a circuit board and such visible. I spent a fair amount of time masking those parts away, and hadn't considered that they might be helping the reconstruction.

Has anyone been successful with this? I have been trying for the last hour just to get some acceptable results with the Japanese beetle but nothing yet. At this point its just for the challenge of doing it, not for the money :D

  its fine im sorry i have no way to turn the actual photos into a model the only thing i can do is to model it all by myself i can also put it on the kind of glass thingy platform that in the actual pictures it is on it and i can make it into animation that rotates but thats all i can do
