We manage a fund that emulates the investment strategies of large college endowments and pension funds through allocating investments into various categories including public US and global equities, private equity, real estate, hedge funds, oil and gas, commodities, fixed income and other. We want to highlight the advantages offered through direct or private investments into various asset classes that are not available through liquid and public markets. Task is to create a 1500-2000 white paper outlining the benefits provided by private investments versus publicly available securities. Private investments include direct investments into primarily private equity, real estate, and potentially also in natural resources such as oil , and gas, timber, and other. Primary benefits include enhanced return potential, illiquidity premium, and reduced correlation with other investments. Challenges include access to specific investments and/or high quality funds. In addition, most private funds are less liquid than public investments. The opportunity is quite pronounced and has been utilzed extensively by institutions for decades, and is now becoming more available to individual investors. Primary references should be made to private equity and real estate, but various other asset classes may be included. Still, access remains as a challenge, although means to access is increasing (of course, this is us).
