Have done this multiple times. May I suggest docker-flow-proxy with docker swarm (if that works for you?) Can be made completely automatic - setup DNS and associate FQDN with backend service/container without no real manual intervention. If not swarm, then manual configuration of haproxy is also straightforward. Services can be forwarded via TLS pass-through using SNI routing if the services aren't HTTP. If you prefer traefik or nginx that works for me to. HAProxy is better for TLS passthrogh because it can do kernel-level socket splicing and so it's CPU/Memory footprint very low.
