Masonry like centred layout

I've created a grid layout as you can see in this demo: [login to view URL]

As the grid is centred I achieved this simply using display: inline-block and just applying text-align: centre to the container. BUT now the client has asked for 'double height' blocks too, as you'll see in the codepen the 'grid-block' with the 'large' class are double the height but as these are inline-block there's massive gaps to the side.

I need to create a layout where the blocks fill all these gaps, like you do with a masonry layout for example but there doesn't seem to be a layout mode that allows for this.
