VBA - Excel & web scraping, WordPress speed

My main areas of expertise are VBA macros (Excel, web scraping) and WordPress speed optimization, where I regularly achieve 95+ score in Google PageSpeed Insights / GTmetrix. I also develop WordPress plugins, mostly WooCommerce-related. In Excel VBA I like to work on big data sets, for example, stock market and Forex data, where code performance matters. WooCommerce product page. Google PageSpeed Insights - 100 desktop and 98 mobile score. GTmetrix - 99 PageSpeed Score and 97 YSlow score. On load time is about 0.6 - 0.7 seconds, with only WooCommerce cart updating a bit later. Normally page would load 2-3 seconds, because of the distance from Poland to Canada where GTmetrix test server is located, but thanks to Cloudflare CDN (free), only the first request from one geographical area takes this long. Requested content is then served from the nearest location.

WordPress website speed optimization

I am an expert in making Excel files open, close, save and work faster and in decreasing their size.

I created a macro which lists worksheets by their size in MB. It's a good starting point when file size is suspiciously large.

I know multiple ways of improving speed of workbook, for example:

- changing file format
- finding and deleting blank ranges treated as used
- eliminating unnecessary external connections
- replacing big tables with ranges (for Excel 2016 and newer not needed)
- replacing formulas with faster counterparts (especially so-called volatile formulas)
- replacing formulas with macros
- optimizing existing VBA macros, in which I have the highest level of proficiency
- scanning worksheets for objects like vector graphics which can be oversized and completely slow Excel down

Improving Excel file performance

Presented Excel file connects with another Excel workbook, which contains real time stock data. It sends an email alert via Outlook, when stock price reaches trigger value (can happen only once for each stock per day).

User can customize recipient's email, title, body and use <results> tag in the body, so that they appear in desired place.

My macros can also send many emails at once, based on email list in Excel.
I can send emails from any email assigned to Outlook account on this PC, not only the main account.

Requires Windows OS and Outlook installed. Outlook doesn't need to be open for the macro to work.

Emails from Excel

This UserForm allows to read data from barcode scanner. If barcode is new, user fills in the fields and clicks on "Save" button to add it to database.

In case barcode already exists in database, form fills in automatically. User can edit data and overwrite. Edits can also be done by manually entering or pasting barcode and then changing & saving data.

Such forms can be very convenient, visually appealing and provide a high level of data validation through macros.
It must be considered however, that doing the same functionality in Excel cells is faster to create, easier to adjust and with proper formatting, for example hiding gridlines and column / row headers, simple worksheet can be a good, professionally looking tool for data entry (with database in different worksheet).

UserForm automation

Presented macro imports data from CSV file. I can also write macros which take data from standard text files or simply from Excel. Data is properly positioned and formatted in Excel worksheet.

Page breaks are reset and then inserted by macro in correct positions, to make sure that tables aren't split between 2 pages when printed.
As with every other automation I use the fastest methods and smart logic to process data. Whole operation lasts basically as much as it takes for VBA to open source file, even for huge data sets.

Sometimes text files aren't structured too well or CSV files don't follow CSV specification, especially don't have strings containing delimiter within double quotes, but even with such files, usually I'm able to find a workaround based on data pattern and read the file properly.

Raw data to Excel with VBA - processing and formatting

The application uses one of 2 possible ways to send sound notifications with Excel - Microsoft's Text-To-Speach processor build in VBA. It communicates user about real time data reaching alert trigger value, by reading predefined text in corresponding cells.

Each data set has a limit of notifications, one per user defined number of seconds. It's to avoid spam, when the value keeps fluctuating around trigger level.

Another way of sending sound notifications is to use .wav files - either default Windows system sounds or custom ones.

You can make Excel play 'Happy Birthday to You' when opening file on Your Birthday or simply grab a mic, record own notifications and use Excel to play them based on specified conditions!
