URL Re-direction/Link Tracking Mechanism

This project is a prototype development for a much larger project. Successful completion of this stage will result in progression to the next phase.
The principle involves inserting customized URL links into an e-mail when it is sent, so as to be able to identify which recipient(s) click on which URL’s when they receive the e-mails.
So imagine an e-mail (a newsletter for example) contains various links in it to different pages on the web site of the sender.
The idea is to encode these URL’s as the e-mail is sent, and replace each URL with a URL that is directed to a particular web service, but is also encoded with not only the actual target URL (the original page link), but also the sender and recipient of the e-mail.
When the recipient receives the e-mail and clicks on a particular link, he or she would be directed to the web service link which would then re-direct him or her to to the correct page link. But the web service will also send an e-mail to the sender of the e-mail for each link clicked, identifying the recipient that clicked on the link and the actual link.
