Hello freelance illustrators!
I run a small publishing company, of the kind they would call an "indie" publishing house... i.e. we do it all properly to deliver an exceptional product! but there's more freedom and staying true to the author's vision that traditional mainstream publishing houses. We have been doing this for 2 years and with every book I can hand to an author the passion just keeps growing!
Why do I need you?
We are starting on our first picture book for young kids and I need to commission an illustrator. Wonderful project, awesome author and potential for this to grow into a series of books... Think big people! I have had a heck of a time finding an illustrator the normal way (google, industry contacts, etc). All the big names are booked with work until next year or they charge the earth. Found a lovely artist who started the concept design and then pulled out because he doesn't have enough time working a full normal day job as well. I do have some character designs to help you get started and see the look we like. We also have roughly planned the illustrations for each page (but your input is welcome once you have the story in front of you. All told there's 6 characters that need to be refined. Approx. 16 illustrations, front cover and back cover. The style is reminiscent of Disney animated movies (think Lilo and Stitch but a bit more rustic / sketchy). I will send through what I have to you by email to get you started once we've made contact. I would be grateful if you can let me know what you would charge. The fee is negotiable. I am interested in quality work and someone who can capture the spirit of a story about a little girl's imagination. That said, budget is not unlimited, so please be kind... :-) I look forwards to hearing from you!
