If you use SQL Server, it would be best to optimize the Database Query, that would improve the Performance in a good part, since you would leave the workload to the Database Server and not your application in VB6. What you did is not wrong, only that your clients grew to a large extent, and a good recommendation to optimize the process, would be to develop a Stored Procedure in the Database, to perform that search operation.

Hello there. I have read your inquiries about optimization for your VB6 Application. A couple of problems here. One, VB6 doesn't have any asynchronous threading, other than the Sleep method, which really holds up your application. Second, why isn't your data being used by SQL Server to use Stored Procedures to run your code, then the underlying code base will just consume the return of the SQL server procedure. I would suggest rebuilding the application in C# Asp.net application or WPF application. It would be much faster and SQL server uses indexing to make the queries run smoother and quicker. I can start on this project for you at $300, but it will take more money if you decide to rebuild the system. Even optimization can take a few weeks if major tweaks are done.
