Need a logo for news website and relative social media kit

What we are looking is for a logo for the website of a local newspaper based in the town of Chania in the island of Crete. The logo will be used on social media account. We would also like a social media kit that will fit the logo This will be the website for a newspaper which had started from the socialist party during the early 80s and gradually became politically independent as the socialist party changed directives and policies. The title of the newspaper is “Αγώνας της Κρήτης» means «struggle of Crete”. Thus it is connected to popular local struggles and it was a highly opiniated news media. However in the past years it has become more centre-left oriented. The readers are mostly people who live in the island of Crete and want to learn local news but from a specific progressive perspective. However, a large portion of its readership is also situated in other parts of Greece and consists mostly of people who want to learn news from Crete and Chania. The original logo of the newspaper was the figure of a traditional Cretan man gazing proudly on top of Crete. On his right side the sun that rises. The figure of the Cretan man is linked to the Cretan identity and popular struggles and people who see it identify it as distinctly Cretan. I don’t know if it is possible to have a logo which is a minimalist mascot with words or wordmark or if that is too much. Maybe we could modernise the original mascot. Mascot doesn't need to be central to the design. I am open to any suggestions you might have. I attach three files. One is the original logo when newspaper was first published, second is from a more recent copy of the newspaper, third one is a website logo that we disapproved. We want something more modern and minimal.
