• Briefly discuss the work’s historical context, but do not include extensive contextual/biographical information (one concise paragraph maximum). • Consider form, harmony, tonality, melody, rhythm, and texture; but also think about the sound of the music and its emotional/expressive content. • Avoid at all costs a bar-by-bar (‘shopping-list’) account (e.g., ‘there is a tonic chord in bar one, then a subdominant chord in bar two, then a dominant chord in bar three …’). This is rarely the best approach, and is almost always boring to write – and to read. • Ideally, give an overview of the movement (in the form of a table), and then focus on three or four interesting passages, details or characteristics, showing how they relate to the movement as a whole. • Include musical examples and diagrams/figures where appropriate. Musical examples can either be scanned directly from the score or prepared using Sibelius, then inserted into your text. • Music examples (i.e., score extracts) must have full captions indicating details of the passage concerned (e.g., ‘Example 1: Mozart, Symphony no. 40 in G minor K. 550 (1788), I, bb. 1–4’).
